How to Clean and Store a Safety Razor

Double Edge Safety Razor from The Groomed Gentlemen

A good safety razor should outlive you. The metal doesn't wear out, the mechanism has almost nothing to break, and a blade costs pennies. What kills razors isn't age — it's neglect: soap scum, hard-water buildup, and being stored wet in a steamy bathroom. Five minutes of care now and then keeps yours shaving like new.

After every shave (30 seconds)

  1. Rinse it properly. Loosen the head, hold the razor under the tap, and let water flush out the whiskers and lather trapped around the blade. This matters more than any deep clean.
  2. Shake and pat dry. Shake off the water and blot the razor with a towel. Don't wipe the blade edge itself — that's how blades dull and fingers get cut.
  3. Store it dry. Leave it somewhere air can circulate — a stand, a shelf, or its travel case left open. A razor sealed wet in a cabinet is a razor growing corrosion.

Once a month (5 minutes)

  1. Disassemble the razor and put the blade in the recycling (carefully — a blade bank or a wrapped tin works).
  2. Soak the razor parts in warm water with a drop of dish soap for a few minutes.
  3. Scrub gently with a soft toothbrush — the threads and the grooves under the head are where buildup hides.
  4. For white hard-water crust, a short soak in equal parts water and white vinegar loosens it; rinse well after.
  5. Dry everything completely, load a fresh blade, and reassemble.

Storage rules that actually matter

  • Dry beats fancy. A dry shelf beats an expensive stand in a steamed-up shower every time.
  • Travel with the case. Our Double Edge Safety Razor ships with a mirrored travel case — use it. It protects the blade edge and everything else in your bag from the blade.
  • Keep blades dry and separate. Spare blades live in their paper wraps, somewhere dry — not loose in a wet drawer.

When to change the blade

Most men get 3–5 good shaves from a blade. When it starts to tug instead of glide, it's done — a fresh blade costs a few cents and a dull one costs you razor burn. Pair a clean razor with a proper lather from our Sandalwood Shaving Soap and a finish of aftershave lotion, and you've got the full ritual — the same three we bundle as The Clean Cut Kit.

Take care of the razor, and the razor takes care of every shave after.
